PSPgo initial thoughts

At , first, I was excited about the new PSP system to be available in the fall.  Smaller and sleeker and lighter with a better battery life.  But after actually thinking about it and not letting emotions get in the way, I have decided I am not going to be getting it, for several reasons

  1. Layout- At first I though, form the pictures, that it looked too narrow, making the whole thing cramped.  But as I thought about it, it is still wider than my DS, and I manage that fine (I have average-sized hands).  The problem is, Sony does not care about the wants of the players.  We all wanted dual analog sticks.  Instead, we have one analog stick, placed in what i think is going to be an awkward position.  Where the other stick should have been, we have large start and select buttons.  A complete waste of space.  The screen may be smaller, but I think I can live with that
  2. The loss of the UMD drive.  I know, I know, at first that seems like a great thing.  And there are many advantages to it: quicker loading times, lighter, less battery consumption, you can carry an entire library around with a handful of memory sticks.  All wonderful.  But here’s the problem: I almost exclusively buy used games.  I am not dying enough to play any game that i can not wait a month.  Without a UMD drive, with everything being downloadable only, I will no longer be able to buy used games.  And If I can not buy used games, then I can not sell games back for credit.  And this is all very important to me.  Yes, it will be a little more palatable if prices are dropped $5-$10 dollars from what it costs retail, but I don’t expect Sony to do that.  And since I don’t collect games, I am able to sell games back for $10-15.  And with my Gamestop reward card, I get a discount on used games and bonus credit when I sell games back.

So those are my thoughts.  There is a reason why Sony is NOT going to discontinue the sale of the PSP-3000.  Because people still want a large screen, and a wider base and still want to buy used games.  Now, one day this will all be moot because Sony will no longer put any games on UMD and everything will be downloadable only, like Patapon 2.  But until that happens, as log as Sony releases games on disc, I will continue to use my good old PSP.
