Random thought of the day- June 3- Justice: The Philadelphia Way

Several days ago, and 11-year old girl was raped after dropping her sister off at school.
Witnesses came forward, and between their descriptions, and the girl’s description, police put together a composite sketch of the attacker and managed to discover his identity. The police showed this sketch around several neighborhoods in Philly, and in one of those neighborhoods, people recognized him. And when he showed up, they beat the crap out of him. I mean, put the man in the hospital in critical condition. And all of this was captured on video from a security camera.
When the police came out to comment, i expected them to say something along the lines of, we’re glad we got the guy, but people shouldn’t take the law into their own hands. They should call the authorities.
But they didn’t, not as far as I could find. I have found no quotes where the police chastise the attackers for pummeling an unarmed. The only quotes i’ve found say, we’re glad we got the guy, we hope, we think, he’s the man. No condemnation of the vigilante justice
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. Part of me wishes that they had killed this guy, but then they probably would have gone to jail for manslaughter. I wish we had more civic minded, community minded people stepping for their neighbors and neighborhoods.
I’m not advocating being the Punisher and going out and looking for trouble and shooting up people and places, but if trouble finds you, its nice to see some good old-fashioned vigilante justice. Because sometimes, the only real punishment is a good old-fashioned self- righteous dose of pain, suffering and humiliation which the animal will most likely not see in jail
I’m just so astounded that no charges, to this point, have been levied against the attackers, and the police haven’t come out with a statement against this type of justice.
Not that I’m complaining. I just wish more people had the balls to do what these guys did and mete out some street justice where deserved.
