I still can’t believe what I watched at the end of the Phillies gam Fridya night. It was like a horrible flashback to the middle game of the Yankees series, where Lidge blew a 2 run lead.
But in this game, the blame can be spread around… Lidge gets two outs, and then the next three batters all get down in the count 1-2. First batter gets a base hit. Second batter manages a walk. Third batter gets on because of Feliz error. And then the double that ends the game.
Last year, the Phillies didn’t blow a single gma they were winning after 8 innings. Funny how things can change 6 months later.
So Lidge gets a piece because twice, on 1-2 counts, he throws balls that are hitable instead of burying a slider or throwing something to chase. He gets a piece because he walked a guy after a 1-2 count. And a piece for throwing a cookie to lose the game.
But Feliz… he’s one of the best third basemen in the game, and he could have ended the game and given the Phillies theor 8th win in a row and keep the Phillies 3 game up.
All of that being said, though, the offense owns a huge piece of the blame. 11 men left on base. Again. Guys on 3rd with less than 2 outs stranded when a sac fly could have brought them in. Guys on 1st and 2nd with no outs, stranded. Jimmy Rollins coming up after an intentional walk to Matt Stairs. And he pops up. Again.
Rollins. he earns his own forthcoming post. 2 days in a row and he strands 9 or 10 guys on base. Not a single hit, or even sac fly, with runners in scoring position.
The one saving grace right now is that the Mets are fielding a AAA squad, and once they are done with the lowly Nationals and play real competition, they will fall even farther. And Atlanta and Flordia, they’re not even worth mentioning.
Will catch up after tomorrow’s Fox game of the week.
