New Baby Coming
113 viewsLife was just getting settled into a nice, predictable routine. My one and a half year sleeps through the night, I can watch most of my television shows within a day of their airing, I am mostly caught up on my comic book reading, and I can play my Wii a couple hours a week. But BAM! The reality of my second child coming, and coming swiftly, has sucker punched me.
The baby isn’t even here yet, and things are starting to get upended. I thought I had until the actual day of birth to enjoy the simple things in life again. I was wrong. I live in a modest 3 bedroom house in Jersey. if you had asked me when we bought this house three years ago if we would have a second kid while still living here, I would have offered and emphatic NO. But times are troubled, and here we still are, expecting a second child. So that means taking a apart the office and converting it into another child’s room. Now, that would have been relatively simple if it was going to be the nursery for the second child. But it is considerably larger than my son’s room, so we are moving him and keeping the nursery for the new baby.
Anyway, we deconstructed the office, relocating my computer downstairs and replacing my wife’s computer with a laptop for the dining room table. We tore up the carpet in the office, revealing half decent hardwood underneath with hundreds of staple holes from the carpet bad. We covered up the floor with an area rug, and now the task of moving my son’s furniture from the nursery into the new room begins. The furniture is heavy: my son is my parent’s first grandchild, and they bought nice stuff for him. Nice… and heavy. Real wood. My brother was supposed to help me- he’s 19 years old, and an ex-high school wrestler. But he popped a hernia two weeks ago, voiding that commitment. So now we have to employ others to help with this arduous process.
And once he is moved, we get to strat on putting the new kid’s furniture together- yes, it’s from Ikea. $4000 furniture for the first kid, $800 furniture for the second. Thta’s life. There’s fifteen drawers among all of the chests and dressers we bought, and just putting them together can take 20-30 minutes apiece, and that’s on top of putting together the actual dressers and crib. So what weekends remain are filled with the busy work of preparing.
5 months to go becomes 5 weeks to go rather quickly
So here I am, with five weeks to go before my daughter comes into the world, but my life is on it’s head already. I’m trying to find rest where I can, but it ain’t easy. Trying to enjoy the last vestiges of pseudo-freedom and sleep while I can.
Thankfully i do my bets dental work on 5 hours sleep.
I’m thinking of leaving for Mexico, swine Flu be damned.
Only 18 years and 3 months until me unborn daughter leaves for college. Counting down the days.

Ha Ha! This sounds familiar. The Ikea furniture is always a joy – somehow you forget in store when you see it, that it will come in about 2 billion pieces, with a very helpful image only instructions! I still can not quite believe I managed to put it all together.
I think I am about five months ahead of you – my second son is four months now. The five hours sleep does not get any more satisfying, but when you can see and hold your daughter – it will be all worth it! Honest. Really. Most of the time!
