Fairly odd parents: Anti-Poof Review

Well, I watched the special tonight, and I was left with mixed feelings on the experience.

The idea had to be explored.  Ever since we were introduced to Poof, I knew we would see an Anti-Poof.  After all, every fairy has an anti-fairy.  And if you though about it, you knew what you would get: everything opposite of Poof.

  1. Poof is round, Foop is square
  2. Poof acts and thinks like a baby, he acts and thinks like an adult
  3. Poof is good, he is evil
  4. Poof is simple, he is an evil genius
  5. Poof is always wide awake, he is… well… he likes to sleep

The plot is quite simple.  Anti-Wanda has a baby, and he is pure evil.  And he wants to be the only powerful fairy baby.  So he sets out to eliminate Poof.  The first half of the episode is the set up: the birth of Foop, his learning of Poof, his first encounter with Wanda, Cosmo, and Timmy, and his path of wanton destruction through both Fairy and Anti-fairy World.  The second half is the battle between Poof and Foop.

The epsidoe was entertaining if not wonderful.  Personally, I enjoy the Timmy-centric specials and episodes.  The ones that focus too much on the fairies, while they may be expanding the FOP universe, stray too much from what makes the cartoon endearing: Timmy’s interaction with his fairy god parents.  The battle between Poof and Foop was a little too long, and quite frankly, a little on the silly side, but mildly entertaining.

The usual jokes are here, like Cosmos bathroom humor and getting confused by his own name, and anti-Wanda’s hillbilly insanity.  And the usual weird stuff.  And I mean weird.  I’m talking a gigantic cow with eight spider legs and huge, dangling udders.  Really, really bizarre stuff.    And all of the major players are involved, though I would like to have seen the Pixies, and I would like to have seen Jorgan play a bigger role.  Maybe the toothfairy, too (or not).

Foop reminded me a little of Stewie from Family Guy, though without the homosexual undertones.  Its hard these days to do an infant evil genius and not have him compared to Stewie griffin.  At least they gave Foop an evil moustache.

This episode was nothing special, but entertaining enough to sit through at least once just to experience the insanity.  I wish Timmy had been given a bigger role, but this was purely a fairy-on-fairy conflict, and Timmy, while he plays an important role, pretty much sits this one out for most of the time.

So give it a whirl.  And let me know what you think.
