Spongebob Retrospect

I was just watching an older Spongebob episode- not “classic” old, but several years. It was the Kelp Shake episode, and while in the middle of viewing all of these new mediocre SB episodes, it reminded me of what makes a good Spongebob episode good, and not just fair.

It’s a Plankton episode, but that’s okay. I do like some of them.

Now what makes this episode good?

The difference, first off, is the interesting story- competition for Krabs from a mysterious restaurant.
The eventual twist to the normal story- Krabs and Plankton working together
The gags- they are literally non-stop. The Kelp Shake restaurants reproducing on their own, the laser canon incinerating Plankton, thew slow, tense build-up as Krabs and Plankton attempt to analyze the drink anf finally taste it, the sudden growth of hair on everyone who drank the shake, the different plans to steal the formula of the shake. The entire episode is visually entertaining.
The pace of the story- no wasted time, no wasted scenes, no real filler to bog it down
The ending. This is where so many SB episodes eventually fail. This is actually a quite adult ending theme-wise (though kids will enjoy it on their own level), and a theme we see so often in literature. Krabs and Plankton joined up to discover the secret of the Shakes, but in the end they realize that they can not truly exist, can not be whole or happy, unless they are mortal enemies, and they quickly return to their natural state, with Plankton trying to steal the formula. And Krabs gives him a head start. Now, I’m not saying that every Spongebob needs such a thought provoking ending, like this episode, or the Rule of Dumb, which is actually a story of how power corrupts, but a good SB needs a decent ending.

Notice how the lack of Spongebob in this episode as a main character doesn’t hurt the episode. SB has so many strong, interesting characters that you don’t need SB in every episode if you use the characters well.

If you watch this episode, and compare it to the newer episodes, you can easily appreciate how the older SB were written and constructed. Though I have not posted a review for Tentacle Vision yet, the 7th new episode from the Bash, I will say that this episode, out of all of the new ones, is so far the best because it follows the same concepts above: An interesting premise, continuous site gags, funny dialogue, and a good ending.

Spongebob-10 new episodes

As you guys know, I review all new Spongebob episodes. I already did To Squarepants or Not to Squarepants, and I am going to do Chum Caverns later tonight. But as you know, 10 new episodes were shown tonight. I have a job and alife, and do not have time to watch and review all of them now. But I will do 2 a day this week, so all the reviews will be up by Friday night. So check back daily this week for new reviews

SpongeBob Summer Bash Coming-New Episodes on their way

As all of my loyal fans know, I have been severely disappointed with the newer SB episodes. Just look at my scathing reviews of several of the last episodes, as well my article describing my general disappointment, and you’ll see how critical I have been

But here comes the tenth anniversary celebration, and in addition to counting down the ten fan-favorite episodes, there are supposedly going to be ten new episodes. Starting this Friday. And I believe the first episode features our Sponge Bob as Mr. Roundpants instead of Mr. Squarepants.

Keeping my hopes high. Come back over the weekend to get my reviews and impressions

New Spongebob episodes- Spongebob Summer Bash Part 2

At the office catching up on notes and, of course, watching Spongebob.

Just saw a comemrcial for the summer bash, which will start on Friday July 17.

And just to let you know, the worm episode is on right now. You know, the one where SB and Patrick find a ball but it is really a worm. And it gives birth. This is one of the most disgusting SB episodes ever, from the worms themselves, to the green slime they squirt on everyone, to Larry trying to eat them! Just follows the trend of SB getting stranger over the years

Spongebob review- Spy Buddies

Another excellent newer (but not new) SB episode. Several laugh out loud moments, including: 1) when SB and Patrick are sitting in the car, reading all of the weapons on the dash, and they hit the self destruct 2) after the car self destructs, SB’s face is all messed up and Patrick’s face is gone 3) at the end, when they are tearing each others costumes off, SB tears off Squidward’s face 4) when Krabs starts firing his own customers at Plankton’s blimp with a cannon .

Every time I see this episode, I laugh again. It is well-constructed, entertaining, and full of jokes and funny visuals. All of the important characters are present, and while it doesnt’ follow James Bond exactly, we do get Sandy Cheeks as Q, the inventor of great gadgets. She shows them all off to SB and Patrick, the last gadget being a sleep ray. When she laughs and tells Patrick that she won’t give any of them to SB and Patrick, Patrick takes that gun, puts Sandy to sleep, and steals all of the new toys.

Spy Buddies is an excellent episode that can be watched and re-watched many times because it has every time: a story, jokes, and great visuals

Daily Spongebob thought: June 16th. Rule of Dumb

Watching Rule of Dumb, where Patrick learns he is king. Excellent episode, showing ho absolute power, even imaginary, can corrupt, even the dumbest of creatures. He steals food and comic books and a baby’s pacifier and tries to have Squidward’s house to build his own ferris wheel. He asks whether he should hang his TV over the swimming pool or Faberge eggs.

And when he sees the monster that he has become in the mirror at the end- excellent. This episode is one of the few that actually teaches a good lesson. That being a bully is wrong and will leave you with nothing in the end.

And, of course, we learn that Gary and Patrick are somehow related.

They should do a sequel showing hos Gary rules

Spongebob Summer Bash- New Episodes coming!

There was a time, once upon a time, long, long ago, when my heart started beating a little faster upon hearing that new SB episodes were on their way. Like 2 or 3 years ago. Since then, alas, I am much less excited than I used to be. because, as you all well know, the last several season’s of new episodes have been, in short, bad. I won’t beat around the bush, here. Not just bad. Awful. Unwatchable. And while this is a sin in of itself, it’s not the worst sin. The worst thing about the new SB episodes the past year or two (with one exception here or there) is that they have been boring.

Well, here I am, at work on Saturday morning, and my first patient was a child. So I got to watch SB. (Roller Cowards, excellent episode), and I see a commercial for a SB spectacular this July. 10 new episodes! The commercial was pretty extravagant, and for a moment I thought that maybe they were doing a new hour-long tv special, or maybe a new movie. But in the end, they just announced that there would be 10 new episodes this summer. And I was far from excited. And that made me sad. I know that every show reaches a natural end when the ideas run dry. But SB always seems so ripe with possible stories that it should never get stale.

I am looking forward to the new episodes. And I will watch them. I will make sure I tape them this time in case I am at work.

But I don’t feel the excitement that I used to. I hope the SB crew can win me back.

New Spongebob episodes- disappointed

I will admit, I missed Thursday and Friday’s new Spongebob episodes. I checked my program guide for the next three days, but could not find any upcoming airings. And I can’t say that I am disappointed. Because what i have seen the first three days has been average to below average, and, like I said in my previous posts, not worth re-watching.

Anyway, when i see them, i will comment. Thurday’s episode look like it had potential, but I had an adult in my dental chair and had to turn it off.

Until then, I will conitnue to watch older episodes of Spongebob, those that are worth watching over and over again. Like when SB comes down with the Ick, and when SB travels through his friends dreams, and when Sb and Patrick are stuck int he Treedomw qhilw Sany is hidernating, and when Patrick becomes smart. You know what i mean. The good episodes. Not the, we need to make more so we can get paid episodes.
