Of course, on the surface, Spongebob appears to be a cartoon designed for the 6-12 year old crowd. The colors, the funny aquatic creatures, the underwater squirrel, the quirky music. But anyone who has watched SB knows that, in general, this cartoon is more appropriate for the under 5 crowd, who are too young to understand the crude humor, and the high school and college crowd, who have created many a drinking game around Spongebob. But for the impressionable 6-12 year group… this cartoon can thrust many a bad lessons upon them. And here they are, in my esteemed estimation, the top 5 inappropriate Spongebob episodes for impressionable children:

5. Pest of the West- This episode is just awful all around, and there is a reason why Atlantis Squarepantis and Dunces and Dragons and Where’s Gary are shown all the time while Pest of the West stays locked in the vault. The story is awful and the dialogue is offensive. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I remember being really turned off by the constant use of the word “stupid” and how SB constantly offended Patrick. The lessons on how to treat friends in this episode are horrible, and thankly, second chances at viewing it are few and far between. EVERYONE should avoid this episode, not just the 6-12 year old crowd

4. Bubble Buddy- This episode features Spongebob as a killer. He buries some poor guy up to his neck in the sand during high tide, and at the end of the episode, we see the dead fish’s angel going up to Heaven. I mean, this is just wrong

3. Frankendoodle- Just like cartoons and shows that show monsters lurking in the closet and under the bed, striking fear into the heart of young children, this episode is just plain scary. And kids these days already don’t want to do anything creative or artistic. All they want to do is veg and play video games and watch TV. So this episode, which features an innocent drawing turned into a blood thirsty monster look to erase Spongebob, may be too much for children to handle. The last thing we need is children afraid to even pick up a pencil

2. #1 Fan- Mr Krabs digging up a corpse just to get a hat back. Not only do we have grave robbing in this episode, we have zombie fish erupting from the ground and assaulting Mr Krabs. As a child, there was nothing scarier that the walking dead. After seeing the Thriller video, my insides knotted up every time we would pass a cemetery in the car, and I could just imagine the rotting corpses erupting from the dirt to hunt me down. Now, this episode is not as bad as Thriller but still… grave robbing, zombie fish… not a good episode for children

1. And finally, the most inappropriate SB episode for children… Nasty Patty. Could there be any other? I mean, Krabs and SB spend the entire episode trying to bury the health inspector, whom they think they killed. Just awful. Don’t get me wrong, its a good episode… if your fourteen or over. But for the youngest viewers, it is nightmare inducing.

Let me know what you think below. And don’t forget to check out my other Top 5 SB lists

5. Pets or Pests- Spongebob and Patrick discover a worm while playing. Worm gives birth, chased off by Gary, leaving SB with a half a dozen baby worms. They basically spend the entire episode squirting fluids into the character’s faces. Quite disgusting.

4. Ghost host- The Flying Dutchman finds that he is no longer scary, and Spongebob helps him get his horror back. This episode contains many gruesome scenes as The Dutchman practices his technique. Eyeballs melting and creepy baby heads and spiders abound, and man, it is hard to watch. i wonder how kids under 10 handle watching some of these scenes

3. Ick- Spongebob gets a disease that causes him to grow a green, algae substance. Not too bad until the end, but when it gets gross, it gets gross. He comes to work, all swollen, and his pores start shooting green goo all over everyone. the sounds alone make you queasy

2. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV- What, you may ask, is disgusting about this episode? How about when SB is using the utility belt on a shrunken Squidward. he sets him on fire, and for god’s sakes, cuts him in half with a scissor! Its a short part of the episode, but bizarre and disgusting nonetheless.

1. Squidbob Tentaclepants- obviously the most disgusting SB episode. The middle of the episode is not too bad, but in the beginning, when the two of them find themselves combined in the baby wrap and on the other planet and in the teacher’s gift box, the mixture of SB and Squidward is pretty gross. And at the end of the episode, when everyone in Bikini Bottom has been melded together in one big seething mass… I mean, that is sick So that’s that.

Next week, top 5 disturbing SB episodes. Keep your eyes open. And as always, any comments are appreciated. Let me know what I left out

I was just watching an older Spongebob episode- not “classic” old, but several years. It was the Kelp Shake episode, and while in the middle of viewing all of these new mediocre SB episodes, it reminded me of what makes a good Spongebob episode good, and not just fair.

It’s a Plankton episode, but that’s okay. I do like some of them.

Now what makes this episode good?

The difference, first off, is the interesting story- competition for Krabs from a mysterious restaurant.

The eventual twist to the normal story- Krabs and Plankton working together

The gags- they are literally non-stop. The Kelp Shake restaurants reproducing on their own, the laser canon incinerating Plankton, thew slow, tense build-up as Krabs and Plankton attempt to analyze the drink anf finally taste it, the sudden growth of hair on everyone who drank the shake, the different plans to steal the formula of the shake. The entire episode is visually entertaining.

The pace of the story- no wasted time, no wasted scenes, no real filler to bog it down

The ending. This is where so many SB episodes eventually fail. This is actually a quite adult ending theme-wise (though kids will enjoy it on their own level), and a theme we see so often in literature. Krabs and Plankton joined up to discover the secret of the Shakes, but in the end they realize that they can not truly exist, can not be whole or happy, unless they are mortal enemies, and they quickly return to their natural state, with Plankton trying to steal the formula. And Krabs gives him a head start. Now, I’m not saying that every Spongebob needs such a thought provoking ending, like this episode, or the Rule of Dumb, which is actually a story of how power corrupts, but a good SB needs a decent ending.

Notice how the lack of Spongebob in this episode as a main character doesn’t hurt the episode. SB has so many strong, interesting characters that you don’t need SB in every episode if you use the characters well.

If you watch this episode, and compare it to the newer episodes, you can easily appreciate how the older SB were written and constructed. Though I have not posted a review for Tentacle Vision yet, the 7th new episode from the Bash, I will say that this episode, out of all of the new ones, is so far the best because it follows the same concepts above: An interesting premise, continuous site gags, funny dialogue, and a good ending.

So let me know what you think

Growth Spout was the sixth episode from the SB Summer Bash

I feel like a broken record at this point- it was okay, not great.

Episode starts off with Pearl going through a growth spurt, and she demands food. She eats the entire fridge in one bite.

Krabs first goes to Ms. Puff’s house and starts harvesting what look like giant peanuts, but they are all really worms, and they begin to spit disgustingly at him. he then goes to Patrick’s house. When he opens the sand fridge under the rock, he sees all sorts of food. But when he takes it out, it all turns to sand. so he just takes Pat’s bowl of cereal. pearl eats that, but it is not enough. so he raids. Squidward’s house. Now, Squid’s house is full of expensive and exotic foods. Krabs takes it all and feeds it to pearl, but she wants more. so off to SB house, where SB catches Krabs going through his fridge. he thinks it is a slumber party. But Squidward comes over and threatens to call the police. But Mr Krabs rips out his own gold tooth so squidward won’t

Anyway… SB tells Mr. Krabs that he has a secret ingredient so that a single Krabby Patty he makes will fill her up for good. They go to the Krusty Krab. where SB cooks up a special patty. He gives it to Pearl, and she shrinks a little bit and finally feels full.

What is the special ingredient? Love. The bets part of the episode is Mr. Krabs reaction of confusion and disappointment when SB tells him.

Again… nothing special, nothing horrible. It has its moments, but they are few and far between to make it a truly excellent episode. After I saw pearl growing at the beginning of the episode, so big she was destroying the house, I thought we would see her going off on her own. but I was wrong. It would have been funnier, though.

I wish there was more to say on these episodes, but they have been just…blah…

Up next: Tentacle Vision

This is the review of the fifth new episode for the summer bash.

And thank god, no Plankton this time around.

Quick synopsis: Spongebob dances at work and is approached bya talent scout for an audition for a show she is promoting. SB tells Squidward, so off course, Squidward is jealous.

We can to see a little more of Squid’s evil side this episode. He decides he will try to tire SB out so badly he will miss the audition so he can take his place. Squidward convinces SB to allow him to tutor him in the art of dancing, and for a little bit I was reminded of the art school episode. Squid shows SB how to do certain moves, and each time, SB does it better than him, enraging Squidward. Squidward finally gets SB to perform an impossible dance step, and SB stays up all night practicing, and in the morning, he passes out.

Squid takes SB’s place at the audition, and his performance is awful, but the talent evaluator loves him… and he gets the part. And he is so excited.

Until he sees who he is going to be working for- Squilliam. Squilliam yells at him and shows him what dance moves he wants him to do, and Squidward is clearly miserable as he begins.

At the end, we see SB and Patrick in the audience watching Squidward practice.

I’ll put this in the category as most of the newer episodes. Fair. Not horrible, not great, though the middle five minutes where SB is outperforming Squiward is entertaining. Its watchable once or twice, but misses the mark. It misses the wackiness of SB. And the end… the end could have been better.

Again, at last no Plankton.

Yes, another Plankton episode. It’s starting to get on my nerves. So much potential, and the writers are falling back on the same old stories too many times.

The episode is not terribly interesting. In fact, Karen, Plankton’s robot wife, wraps it up quite nicely: Repulsive.

In this episode, Plankton is unknowingly brought back to Sandy’s habit inside of Sandy’s suit. She goes to shower, but before she does, she peels off her fur, revealing the same pink skin we saw after SB and Patrick shaved her. Plankton steals her skin and locks Sandy in her bathroom, and then animates it at the Chum Bucket. It’s quite disgusting. Just watching it shamble along makes you a little queasy. Plankton goes tot the Krusty Krab and tries to steal the formula while SB teaches her how to make a Patty.

Meanwhile, sandy escapes (she puts a coffee pot over her head) and wanders around town looking for the thief. Everyone laughs at her and the police chase her for being naked in public, though she is wearing her bathing suit.

Eventually Sandy makes it to the Krusty Krab where Plankton, in her skin, is making off with the formula. Sandy beats up her own skin, save the formula and puts Plankton in a mustard jar. Then the police show up and arrest her for public indecency.

Once again, I am getting tired of the Plankton episodes. i think they have run out of ideas when it comes to stories about him stealing the formula. I know there is at least one more, if not many more, in the summer bash from the previews, and if there are, I can only hope they’re better. This was was disturbing, yet boring, and I can’t say I’ll go out of my way to watch it again.

This is the third new episode from the SB Summer Bash

In this episode, Plankton decides to try drumming up business by advertising with a catchy sign. He hires Patrick as his advertising guru, and Patrick comes up with the slogan: Chum is Fum. Business booms, and on several occasions, the customers are seen saying that the food is awful, and then they violently throw up. After several days, the customers get bored of the slogan, and Plankton urges Patrick to come up with a new, and he eventually does: Fum is Chum. Customers return. Now, to piss of Krabs, Planlton has installed a microphone next to the cash register, so every time he makes a sale, the dinging sound is transmitted over outside speaks so Krabs can hear it.

Anyway,,, Patrick final quits because he is burned out- he turns around and there is actually a hold through the back of his head through which we can see his brain. his resignation to Plankton is a drawing of himself in a fighter plain. Plankton exclaims that he doesn’t need Patrick, that he can sell anything to his dim-witted customer. he proceeds to degrade is patrons, and his voice is amplified over the speakers. Everyone hears it and spits out the food, and Plankton is assaulted by a hockey team. At the end, we see Patrick, still with the hole in the back of his head, painting a sign for Krabs: Krabby Pattys are Fum.

This was actually an entertaining episode. Much like the episode where SB becomes a waiter to impress Squidward’s rival and we see all of the little SB running around in his head, we get to see inside of Patrick’s head. In this case, Pat is truing to read Plankton’s first sign, Chum is Metabolic Fuel, and his brain catches on fire, and we see all of the little Patrick’s trying to escape.

Three episodes in, and it’s already the second Plankton episode, though in this one, he isn’t trying to steal the formula. Much like the Spongicus episode, where Plankton builds the Colosseum, it’s nice to see Plankton episodes where he isn’t trying to steal the formula, though seeing people eat chum and vomit is gross.

But not all Plankton episodes are good- all we have to do is look at Single cell Anniversary to see how bad they can be

And like always, Patrick-related episodes are always entertaining because Patrick is hysterical.

Check back soon for the next review

This is the second new episode from the Summer Bash

Again, not horrible, watchable, but nothing new. I guess this is the problem with the new episodes: there is very little new material. In this episode, Patrick wants to get a hat, like SB and Squidward have. So he gets a job at the Krusty Krab, holding up a sign pointing to the restaurant, a job he doesn’t do very well.

Mr Krabs eventually gives him a Krusty Krab hat, and he promptly falls over. SB explains that when Pat is nervous, he can not stand. Mr. Krabs decides to make Patrick a side show at the Krusty Krab, where he spends seven hours falling over. At first crowd loves it, but after the seven hours, they get bored and threaten to leave. So Mr. Krabs ups the danger of Pat falling,a dding boxes to the height, and eventually asking him to fall off a diving board into a bucket of spiny sea urchins. He takes off his hat and can not fall, and when Squidward tried to push him, Squidward tumbles down instead. the hat falls from Squidward’s hand onto Pat’s head, and he proceeds to fall on top of a mangled squidward.

We learn at the end that it isn’t nerves which makes Pat fall, but the hat he wears, which is top heavy.

Pretty lame episode, but in fairness, any epsiode that features Patrick in all of his glorious stupidity has its fair share of funny lines and moments.
